On the go picnic….road trip!

February 23, 2011

How many meals do you eat in your car? If it’s more than two a day, you need to take a long look in the rear-view mirror and acknowledge this fact:  you are on a perpetual road trip!

Now that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Grace Kelly seduced Cary Grant in “To Catch a Thief” with a sexy convertible, breathtaking location and a picnic basket packed with grilled chicken and beer. Somehow, I don’t think the effect would have been the same had she pulled through the drive-in window of the local burger joint….

Even if it’s only a beverage while you’re driving, you can do it up in style with a few key essentials. Add a fab scarf, and you’re already on your way to movie-star glam.

First, the right container for hot or cold beverages. For hot, choose a reusable ceramic cup that fits in your cupholder (critical) and also fits your personality. There’s a great assortment of styles and colors available today, complete with co-ordinating lids and sleeves.

For cold beverages, a double-walled cup with a screw-top lid and straw is essential. No more sweaty palms, as you try to avoid condensation drips and spills on your clothes. Double-walled cups keep cold drinks chilled for hours, or at least until the next outlet mall!

If you plan to consume more than a beverage, invest in an insulated tote and coated mat to keep things fresh and tidy. All color-coordinated of course.

Here on Cape Cod, beach parking lots fill up during the lunch hour even during the winter. Yes, you can enjoy a lobster roll, chips and soda while sitting behind the wheel gazing out at the waves in February, and not end up wearing your lunch! Always remember to be considerate of your fellow passengers and avoid smelly foods like onions and garlic. The folks at your next meeting will also thank you.

So next time you hit the road, pack up your picnic essentials and rock it like a movie star. And the Oscar for best picnic in a vehicle goes to…..you!

the A-list picnic

November 22, 2010

Yes, it’s here, the time of year that list-makers love. From to-do lists to shopping lists to holiday gift lists, to top 10 anything-lists, writing a series of words on paper can be enormously satisfying, for those of you who are uber-organized.

Probably the only thing more satisfying than making a list (and checking it twice) is crossing things off. Done, an item completed, a sense of accomplishment, reward me!

At picnic fashion, we have created the ultimate picnic checklist so you don’t have to. This list not only runs down the essentials, but allows you to think beyond the ordinary basket and create the perfect a-list picnic.

Never again will you arrive at a romantic destination, pull out the candelabra and candles and…oops, no matches. I don’t think the iPhone 4 has a lighter app…maybe the next version.

Or unpack at an outdoor concert, discover the ground is a bit soggy and realize you have no waterproof picnic mat…..squishy in all the wrong places! I once sat on my Burberry raincoat on the ground at Tanglewood on a damp, chilly summer evening. A big fashion DON’T…thank goodness it was dark.

The great thing about the picnic checklist is that it doubles as a wish-list! Just leave it checked off, circled, scribbled with “I want this” in a location where the right person will see it. Done? Click on the image to download, check the checklist off your to-dos and have a happy, stress-free holiday season.

Can picnic fashionable be picnic functional?

July 14, 2010

Absolutely! Virtually all of our plastic flatware, dishware, drinkware and serving pieces dress up any picnic, yet they’re lightweight and dishwasher safe. But the best part is their contribution to the planet. They’re eco-friendly—you can use these durable items again and again and reduce waste and energy use. Sadly, we hear the oft-murmured refrain, “But [...]

Assigning tasks to your fellow picnickers

This past weekend, a customer told me that she was “the CEO of the family picnic this year” and was looking forward to delegating. How much fun would it be if that was your full-time job? Just keep in mind your Board of Directors probably includes some of your siblings! Why not send memos on [...]
